Decisions Can Be Complicated

Ever notice how, even when we know what’s best, we sometimes choose the opposite? Funny how that happens! Even with good intentions, it’s easy to take shortcuts or give in to cravings. When emotions are involved, making the best choice isn’t always easy.

When Decisions Feel Complicated – Think of Your Last Impulse Buy

Picture this: you’re out shopping and see a shiny gadget or a pair of shoes you didn’t plan to buy. You already have what you need, but something about it calls to you. Your logical mind might be saying, “You don’t need it,” but your emotions have already decided. Later, you may even regret it, wondering, “What was I thinking?”

Sound familiar? That’s emotional decision-making in action.

Why “Logical” Choices Aren’t Always Simple

We like to believe we’re logical. But the truth? We’re more of a mix. Our emotions make decisions feel more urgent, appealing, or even necessary. And once we choose, our logical mind steps in to justify it: “I’ve worked hard this week; I deserve it,” or “It’s on sale, so I’m saving money.”

This happens with everything—from what we eat to how we spend our time.

The Challenge of Sticking to Goals

Think of a goal, like exercising more or eating healthier. It’s clear why it matters to you, and you’re motivated. But when cravings hit, or the day feels long, it’s easy to slip. It’s not about lacking willpower—it’s just how our minds work.

When things get tough, our emotional mind can override our goals. Later, we wonder, “Why didn’t I stick to my plan?”

Tips for Making Decisions That Feel Right

  1. Pause Before You Decide
Take a few deep breaths before acting. Even a 5-second pause helps you notice if a choice is impulsive or aligned with your true goals.
  2. Check In with Yourself
Ask, “Will this choice help me feel good in the long run?” This simple question reconnects you with your bigger intentions.
  3. Celebrate Small Wins
It’s not about being perfect. Each time you make a choice that supports your goals, celebrate it. Every step counts!

Finding Simplicity Through Awareness

By noticing what drives your choices, you’re taking the wheel. Not every decision will be perfect, but over time, understanding this balance between logic and emotion can help you build a life you love—one small, purposeful choice at a time.
